As the city of Mantua expanded, Francesco I° Gonzaga, in 1401, kept the 4 quarters, created in 1115 by the free Commune, but he expanded the areas. Each quarter was divided into 5 contrade (district). Mostly they took the name of the most important church within their territory. Later there was the habit of identifying them with their coats of arms. The coats of arms were taken originally from an animal or from the characteristic of the ground. The chronicle of the districts stayed unaltered till the XVIII° C. Only by Austrian orders, in 1787, a new toponymy was adopted, setting in official form, the popular name of those days. This denomination, with little change, is still in use. On some street-plates next to the new toponymy you can read the old name; unfortunately this habit has recently been abandoned and, also, by the "modern" names, sometimes, reporting only the Family name, it is impossible to find a way of identifying them.
